Strength Training After 40: Start With Your Current Workout

NEO Performance Lab ยท Published 2026-10-07

You have been exercising for years. Between walks, a class you like, and the gym visits you manage to fit in, you have a week full of exercise and a question about where strength training belongs.

Start with what is already there.

Write down last week's exercise. Include the gym visits and the class you enjoy, along with the day you planned to train but missed, so your coach can see what the week looked like.

Look at what you can repeat

Suppose you keep changing the workout on your phone every time you see an exercise you like, then find yourself a month later trying to remember what you have done.

Keep a record. For exercises you already know, note the weight and repetitions you completed, then take questions about technique or how to progress to your coach before changing the work.

Use that record during the check-in. You can point to what you completed and where you needed help, even if you have forgotten how the session felt by the time you see your coach.

Make room for strength work

The U.S. physical activity guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days each week for adults. Your starting point shapes the work.

Count the trip to the studio when you look for times you can keep across a normal week, especially if you are fitting training between work and another commitment. If work regularly runs late on Wednesdays, don't build your training plan around suddenly leaving early every Wednesday.

Tell the coach which activities you want to continue. A Saturday hike counts too.

Choose the coaching you want in the room

At NEO, Guided gives you an individual program in a shared coaching space, and Concierge gives you one-on-one time with a coach paired with you for continuity. Tell us where you feel lost.

For an injury or health condition, get cleared by your doctor before starting personal training. NEO does not provide physical therapy or rehabilitation.

Apply for coaching with your current routine and the strength goals you want to work on. You can check the formats and rates before applying.
